Amber Rust is a rural photographer who specializes in newborn photography. Although she never sought the business side of photography, her desire for self-improvement drove her to hone her skill as a photographer and turn something she sucked at into a full time career. In the beginning, she worked for a magazine that needed photography, but didn’t have the budget to buy stock photography, so they put a camera in Amber’s hands to fill this need, which sparked a lifelong passion.
Amber wasn’t just born with drive and determination, she was raised in a home with a family business where there wasn’t time to be wasted. Dad greeted the kids every day with the phrase “you get up and you go.” Now that doesn’t mean that there’s not fun to be had, because if it’s not gonna be fun it’s not worth showing up for. Amber’s clients keep coming back, so there’s apparently plenty of fun to be had.
Amber didn’t have the advantage of social media in the beginning, so she depended mostly on word of mouth and her business phone number on the side of the family car. She would shoot one session a month, then one a week, then multiple times a week over a number of years, but made sure to learn a lot from the clients coming in and find out where they congregate and more importantly, what they want.
Two Color Photography has been around for fifteen years, but it has now grown beyond just Amber. She has a creative team of photographers that help shoulder the load of the many shoots coming in and allows Amber to focus more on her passion, the babies. She also helps her local photography community by sharing her experience and mentoring those trying to pursue the business of photography.
