Odd Tog Essentials
Being a professional of any kind means needing tools to help you make your business better including a photography website. Over the years I’ve tried many products and services to make my work more efficient. Below is a list of the ones that have worked best for me. I hope you find this page helpful in your journey as a photographer. Since my goal is to help you be the best photographer you can be, I’ll be continuously on the lookout for new and better tools.
Some of the text below are affiliate links. I receive a small commission if you decide to make a purchase at no additional cost to you. While I very much appreciate the revenue generated by these referrals, please understand that I would not recommend them if I did not believe they would benefit you as a photographer. I personally use all of these products. Please don’t spend money on these products unless they will help you achieve your business goals.
Every photographer needs a place to store, display and sell their photographs. Smugmug is the service I have trusted to do this. This is a premium service that will give you all the tools you need in order to monetize your photography. In the last few years they have also made vast amounts of customization options available so you can make your smugmug site look however you want. I highly recommend this service for you photography website.
All Photographers needs a website and every website needs a host. Hostgator is the host that I have trusted with all my websites. There are lots of web hosts out there, but the reason I choose HostGator is because they have a variety of service tiers that will serve you well at the different stages of your business. You can get a starter package now and upgrade your service as you grow. Their customer service is also amazing. I guarantee you will get more than you pay for with HostGator.
WordPress is a great tool and I recommend it to everyone, but it takes a fair amount of work to turn it into a website. Genesis framework is the tool that automates much of the back end site optimization. It also makes changing the look of your site much easier since the look and functionality of your site are separated. Updating your site is also much easier since you can update genesis independent of your site theme. Genesis Framework is a widely used framework, so if you hire someone to do some work on your site, chances are they will be familiar with the structure. One of the biggest mistakes I made with my first websites was not using a framework, please learn from my mistake and choose the Genesis Framework.
A theme is the tool that gives your wordpress site it’s look. With so much involved in creating your website, a theme allows you to get the look you want, then you just insert your own brand into that structure. After looking at so many themes I chose a Zigzagpress theme for OddTog and I highly recommend them to you. It’s an affordable product all based on the Genesis Framework. I love the look and functionality of these themes and I think you will too.
As far as I’m concerned, WordPress is the best thing that has ever happened to the internet. It gives every photographer a way to get their work onto the internet with very little effort. In addition, it’s absolutely free.
Adobe Creative Cloud
Unless you’ve lived in a cave for the past few decades, you know that Adobe is the gold standard of photo processing and editing software. Every photograph requires some amount of processing in order to make it a work of art. Lightroom and Photoshop are the tools I use to make that happen and I hope you will do the same.
